Buddha Subduing Asurindra Rahu — Life Companion Medallion
The story of Asurindra Rahu tells of a mighty asura who wished to hear the Buddha’s teaching but hesitated because he would have to bow before someone smaller than himself. Knowing his pride, the Buddha appeared in a reclining form larger than Rahu. Even the Buddha’s feet towered above him.
The Buddha taught Rahu not to judge anything before seeing and examining it carefully. Like a large fish that knows only a small pond, Rahu had not understood the scale of the wider world. When shown the Brahma realms, he discovered beings far greater than himself, while the Buddha’s presence surpassed them all. Humbled, Rahu took refuge in the Triple Gem.
This account is associated with the reclining Buddha posture known as Subduing Asurindra Rahu, also represented by the great reclining Buddha at Wat Khun Inthapramun. Artmulet’s Life Companion medallion carries the story as an everyday reminder to remain mindful, open to learning and free from arrogance.
