Indra Bestowing Blessings
Indra Bestowing Blessings represents a ruler whose power rests on virtue and compassion. In the Rigveda and later traditions, Indra is associated with the dawn, flowing waters and the relief of suffering. Thai belief describes his celestial seat growing warm when someone in distress seeks his help.
In this sculpture, Indra sits on a celestial throne above Erawan and the parichat flower of Tavatimsa heaven. His raised right hand bears an eye, recalling the all-seeing Lord of a Thousand Eyes. His left hand holds the vajra, the thunderbolt that symbolizes the strength to overcome difficulties.
The work was conceived by Thanathat Thongniam and Dr. Songphon Khemabunkul, with painter Kriangkamol Nakbangkaew and sculptor Suchat Saejiw. Flowing lines and carefully balanced details express benevolent power in a sculpture intended to become a family heirloom.
